#2017

January 5, 2017

The new year is always an exciting time for me.  It is a time to reflect and renew my commitment to the things that matter.  There is nothing that has mattered more to me over the last 4 years than my service to the students and parents of Fort Worth ISD, and I am proud to announce my re-commitment to this service and my campaign for re-election to the Fort Worth School Board.

In 2013 I was a young mother preparing to send my oldest child to kindergarten for the first time.  Through my experience supporting our schools as a business owner and neighborhood organizer I knew that we had some great schools, but others were not reaching their full potential.  Instead of complaining about the problems that our schools faced, I took the initiative to step up and be part of the solution.  Because of your support, I was successful in my 2013 campaign, and together we have been able to claim many successes on behalf of the children of Fort Worth ISD.

Since taking office FWISD has come a long way and we have a lot to be proud of. During my first term I have:

  • Championed and passed the largest bond program with the largest voter approval in FWISD history which means better facilities and opportunities for the children of FWISD.

  • Expanded FWISD leadership in the state and national arena as representative to Council of the Great City Schools Board of Directors and Executive Committee, a national education research and advocacy organization that works exclusively for urban public school districts.

  • Hired a nationally recognized educator and innovator, Dr. Kent Scribner, as our new Superintendent. Together we have stood together in times of uncertainty and charted a new path for future success in FWISD.

  • Expanded high-quality early childhood education opportunities through district wide universal full day pre-k.

  • Launched a city-wide partnership with the city and business community to improve student outcomes by creating a culture that values early childhood development and literacy.

  • In 2018 we will complete and open our new, state of the art Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) middle and high school which will provide our students with hands on experience to develop the critical thinking skills necessary for a career in the 21st century economy.

We have begun to turn our public schools around in a sustainable way that will only continue to increase their value to our community. We are at a critical juncture in the process of reforming public education locally and I want to continue to help make that happen.

Our students deserve leadership that will put their interests first.

Our parents deserve leadership that will govern from a mother's prospective.

Our teachers deserve stable leadership committed to supporting their professional success.

Our business partners deserve leadership that is focused on results for a strong workforce and economy.

Our taxpayers deserve leadership committed to the wise use of financial resources.

During my first term, I have proven my leadership and commitment to this work.  I hope that over the next several months I can share some of that work and earn your support to continue providing stable and thoughtful leadership for our children's futures.
