In 2014 when former superintendent of FWISD schools Walter Dansby announced his retirement I pledged that I would not engage in fundraising activities until we as a board name an appropriate replacement.  I believed that it was not appropriate to ask for money until we had done the job that we were elected to do.

I was very proud to announce in August the selection of Superintendent Kent Scribner of Phoenix Unified...

Today is a huge day for Transgender youth in FWISD.  I am very proud to share with you several months of hard work that has finally come to fruition.   Superintendent Scribner announced the following at last night's board meeting:

"Today I signed the FWISD Transgender Guidelines.  These guidelines are in alignment with our existing and comprehensive policy on protection of discrimination FFA Local, and provide more speci...

Fort Worth has a lot of great supporters of public education.  I had the opportunity today to hear this presentation about the great things that our community leaders are doing to support early education in Fort Worth.

Their focus is not only FWISD, but all education and early childhood centers in the city.  They will be addressing early literacy and numeracy skills to close the gap of children who enter school rea...

32 percent of the nation’s African American males and some 39 percent of the nation’s Hispanic males attend school each day in urban school systems.  In my role as an elected board member of an urban school system I have had the privilege to review student outcome data on...

In my role on the Fort Worth School Board I have had the opportunity to meet many brilliant people, and then there is San Francisco Superintendent Richard Carranza.  I first met Richard standing in line outside the Eisenhower Administration Offices as we were waiting to go through security to meet with then US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to discuss our respective roles in the national initiative for My Brother's Keeper...

There may not be any subject in education that is more contentious than testing, and it brings up a lot of questions that no one has really looked into on a broad scale. What and how many tests are being administered to students each year?  What are the assessments used for?  Are tests being used to evaluate teachers or are they being used to gauge what students are learning?  How much time is being spent in the classroom ded...

Last July I had the pleasure of joining The Council for the Great City Schools in Washington D.C. for President Obama’s town hall where he discussed moving forward with the My Brother’s Keeper initiative.  It was the experience of a lifetime, not only because of the event that I was attending, but also because I felt that this was the start to something big.

My Brother’s Keeper is not a new idea.  The work behind it is not ne...

Fort Worth, Texas – The Fort Worth ISD today joined with 60 big-city school districts pledging to improve the academic and social outcomes of boys and young men of color. This Council of Great City Schools call-to-action was made at a White House event featuring President Obama.

The FWISD, and each of the districts involved, supports boo...

Wow!  I knew this was going to be hard.  I didn't know it was going to be THIS hard!

The last two months have been a complete whirlwind.  My time is not my own, my house has turned into a makeshift campaign headquarters, and my feet and knuckles hurt from all the walking and talking.  But, man, this journey has been amazing.  I can't believe he amount of support that has turned out behind this effort....

Last week we had the opportunity to meet supporters here in Fort Worth's Southside at my favorite restaurant, Chadra Mezza and Grill.  Christina and Nehme Elbitar are some of the most caring and giving people that I have had the opportunity to know.  I am grateful for their support, and for hosting us.

I also had the opportunity to spend some time with candidates Jacinto Ramos Jr. who is running for the District 1 seat,...
